This July, Gateway Art Gallery is hosting a member show that came together in a pretty unusual way. Every artist in the show pulled two prompts out of a bucket — no choosing, no trading, no do-overs. Whatever they drew, that was their assignment.
The catch is that a lot of the prompts didn't exactly play nice together. Some were contradictory. Some were vague enough to read six different ways. The whole point was to hand artists something awkward and see what they did with it.
What came back was exactly what you'd hope for — work that clearly took some wrestling to make. You can almost see the thinking behind each piece, the moment an artist figured out how to make two incompatible ideas share the same canvas.
The show is called Choose Your Own Adventure, and it opens this July the Gallery. Come see the prompts each artist was working with and how they interpreted them. Some of them will surprise you.
Opening reception: Friday, July 11 at 5:30 pm. Free and open to all.
